Students work on building crosses.

Over two weeks, the students in Mrs. Shouldice’s Grade 5 class from Pope John Paul II School took on the challenge of planning and constructing a “Stations of the Cross” experience for the Kenora community within the Kenora Catholic campus.

The purpose of the project was to introduce the students to an experiential learning opportunity. Students explored the job of a carpenter, and how important this career choice is in our community. They learned that carpenters could be involved in a variety of work, using many different tools. The students took on the role of the carpenter, planning the size of the crosses, measuring the wood, cutting the wood, sanding the wood, and hammering the pieces of their cross together.  Once their crosses were assembled, they then stained them and installed them. Students also worked as a team to take down the Station of the Cross installation at the end of Easter.

Community member were invited to walk the Stations of the Cross on the Kenora Catholic Campus from March 29 - April 6.

This project was supported by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and Experiential Learning funded by the Government of Ontario.

If you like to work with your hands and enjoy a challenge, like to problem solve, please consider the skilled trades and carpentry. You are encouraged to talk to your teacher, parent/guardian about your interest in the skilled trades, or carpentry.
