A Playground Dream Come True: Eight-Year Fundraising Journey Transforms SJPII School Yard
Eight years ago, the students at SJPII School voiced a simple yet profound need: a playground that offered them more engaging activities and opportunities. The school's response was both immediate and visionary. Under the leadership of Vice Principal Tammy Bush, the school embarked on a journey to transform their outdoor space into a landscape of possibilities, inspired by the voices of the students themselves.
"We recognized that our students felt they didn't have anything to do outside," says Tammy Bush. "We had many office referrals and wanted to create a landscape full of possibilities. We surveyed the students and then created long and short-term goals based on their ideas." This inclusive approach laid the foundation for a comprehensive plan, aiming to enhance both the physical and social environment of the school.
Over the past eight years, the school community has been tireless in its fundraising efforts. From retail sales like Farm to Table and Christmas cards to events such as silent online auctions and Brewco brunches, every initiative contributed to the goal. The dedication of the Friends and Families of SJPII, as well as significant contributions like the $10,000 donation from Triple PLAY, played a pivotal role in turning this dream into reality.
"The school community has been amazing throughout this fundraising journey," shares Grace Dunford. "Playground equipment is very expensive, and in Ontario, schools are extremely limited in funding opportunities. The commitment and creativity of our community have been truly inspiring."
The new playground is not just a collection of equipment but a testament to the school's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Key features include a Music Garden with accessible musical instruments and a new saucer swing designed for children of all abilities. "The instruments being set on the pathway means anyone using a wheelchair or mobility device is able to access them and join in," explains Dunford. "We loved that this is something that can be done with other students, children of all abilities making music together."
Tammy Bush highlights the anticipated impact of the new playground: "The kids are excited and proud to have new equipment that adds different elements to the outdoor space. The diversity of options allows for multiple ways to play, from making music to new games on the rope climber. This will give authentic opportunities to learn and grow."
Looking ahead, the school has plans for further improvements. "It may be a few years as we build back up our bank, but the aim is to add at least one more musical piece to the Music Garden," says Dunford. Bush adds, "We would also like to look at the Kindergarten playground to add some fun new features."
Both Bush and Dunford express heartfelt gratitude to the local community. "We are so appreciative that our community really got behind our efforts and our ongoing vision of creating an accessible playground," says Bush. Dunford adds, "Despite many schools and organizations asking for donations from the same businesses, our local businesses have given their money, services, and goods so generously. We could absolutely not have done this without them."
The new playground at SJPII School is more than just a play space; it's a symbol of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision. As the children play, learn, and grow, the echoes of their joy and laughter will forever remind us of the power of collective effort and the importance of creating inclusive spaces for all.
