Ojibway Language Studies

Mrs. Cooke teaches the class counting in Ojibway.

St. John Paul II School is proud to offer Ojibway Language Studies from JK to Grade 6 at our school. The facilitators are fluent in the Ojibway language (Anishinabemowiin) and work with the Ojibway language teachers and students.

At St. Thomas Aquinas High School, students can take Ojibway all the way through from Grade 7 to 12. In 2017, St. Thomas Aquinas students helped create an app in the local dialect of the Treaty #3 area to help students and their families learn the Anishinaabemowin language, traditions and culture. The project was a collaboration between students, elders, teacher Sheila White and Ogoki Learning Inc. Students plan to continue to add new language, phrases and content to the app. The app will be used as a language resource through the Kenora Catholic District School Board and is available to anyone to download.
