First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education

Three dancers make their way around the drum during the pow wow at St. Thomas Aquinas

At St. John Paul II School we recognize that we live on Treaty #3 traditional territory. We strongly believe that it is important children understand and appreciate the culture, traditions and language of the Treaty #3 First Nations and Métis and we are proud to offer a variety of programs in our school.

In 2017-2018 Kenora Catholic began the Elder in Residence Program. There is one elder located at the Catholic Education Centre who supports our school with language and culture initiatives. We are pleased to offer Ojibway language (Anishinabemowiin) studies as we believe Anishinabemowiin is something that should be cherished and taught to future generations.

Our school also takes part in Spring and Fall Feasts, and our students always look forward to the Fall Harvest at Pow Wow Island on Wauzhushk Onigum Nation.
